Short version: Child #3 arrived in January.  Back to work three weeks later.  I have also been involved with both state and national horse organizations, organizing real-life horse events, and my business is only getting busier despite the temps climbing into the triple digits (summer is NOT prime riding time in the Sonoran Desert!).

I hope all is well with you and I hope that I might get into a semi-regular habit of posting things again as I have had a few art projects come my way, just not the time to process them for web presentation.
1.      How long have you been on DeviantArt?

Forever.  It will be 14 years in December.  Remember when you had to go through 10 pages to submit an image and it was focused on skins and things more than drawings?

Oh, and I've had this same account this entire time.  I used to be in the habit of plowing through my gallery and cleaning it up now and again.

   2.      What does your username mean?

Lantairvlea is the name of one of my Guenitha characters.  It means dark blue in their language because Guenitha go for descriptive names and she is predominantly dark blue.

   3.      Describe yourself in three words.

Horsey, creative, persistent

   4.      Are you left or right handed?

Right handed for most things

   5.      What was your first deviation?

My first one is lost in the depths of my hard drive, but this is the oldest one in my gallery: LV- Raquinn's head by lantairvlea
   6.      What is your favourite type of art to create?

I love my pastels, but I also enjoy watercolor immensely and have had good fun with brush and ink ... and I guess I could say traditional art in general.  I do enjoy the flexibility of digital, but I really like the textures found in real media.

   7.      If you could instantly master a different art style, what would it be?

It's more fun exploring the process.  I think it would get dull too fast if it was instantaneous. The journey not the destination!

   8.      What was your first favourite?

The Lurking Turnip by ursulav  Not sure if it was the first, but it's one of at least!  I am a bit of a stingy miser when it comes tobadding things to my favorites unless they are of my characters.

   9.      What type of art do you tend to favourite the most?

Anything particularly poingant, funny, or beautiful.  I also favorite memes I will someday never do and art of my characters.

   10.  Who is your all-time favourite deviant artist?

There's no way to pick just one people!

   11.  If you could meet anyone on DeviantArt in person, who would it be?

I think it'd be fun to gather all of my horsey DA buds together and have fun-filled horsey shenanigans at my place.

   12.  How has a fellow deviant impacted your life?

At nearly 14 years here I think it'd be unfair to mention just one single person, but I have enjoyed the encouragement I have gotten for my continued artistic growth as well as the opportunity to share what I have learned as well.  You all are awesome.

   13.  What are your preferred tools to create art?

Traditionally I enjoy my pastels of various brands, Van Gough travel watercolor set, Staedtler pens, Sumi-E brushes for ink, and I really got to enjoy the texture of the Staedtler Ergosoft colored pencils.  I am debating on my relationship with Prismacolor pencils now, but we'll see about that.

Digitally I still love my 14 year-old Intuos II Wacom tablet and Painter X (someday an upgrade, but why fix what isn't broken?).  I have gotten into using my phone (Samsung Note 4) with it's stylus, though I don't think I will get into doing any "serious" art with it.

   14.  What is the most inspirational place for you to create art?

Where I don't have internet access...

   15.  What is your favourite DeviantArt memory?

April Fools shenanigans are always entertaining, especially people's over-the-top reactions to a temporary thing.
When I had more time I used to go through my watcher's galleries and leave a nice critique.  Feedback on what I liked about their work, their strengths, and also weaknesses and how I thought they could make their work stronger moving forward.  Had I the time I would do this with every new watcher, but I know not everyone appreciates such things, but it really is in the spirit of helping and giving back as you all suppory me.

Anyway, for those of you who watch me, new and old alike, if you want some feedback just comment here and I will take the time to go through your gallery and share my thoughts.  I appreciate the support and enthusiasm for my work that you all share, especially those who are sticking out this quiet time in my creative life (trust me, it won't be quiet forever!).
I am still trying to sell a bunch of art (see previous entry).

Life is super busy.  I haven't mentioned it here previously, but part of the busy-ness comes in the form of a toddler and an infant.  I think I have a couple more years before I really have time to sit down and seriously art again (especially since Child #1 doesn't take naps anymore).

My business has also taken off in crazy ways (like if I get any busier I am going to require a waiting list) with opportunity to have access to more space (we just need to build the facilities, ha!).

So still here.  I try to keep up on comments and notes, but I haven't checked submissions in a while (thus my 3000 submission pile-up...).

I hope all is well with you all!  Thanks to all my knew watchers, sorry there hasn't been much to see recently and I haven't had the time to check your stuff out and possibly reciprocate.

Edit:  Purchased pieces removed and more drawings and paintings added.  I will continue to add to this until I have nothing left to add!

I am highly motivated to move on a lot of my original artwork.  If you see something in my gallery that you like and are curious about ask me!  My piles of art stacked under the bed really do me no good, they need to be out in the world and enjoyed, plus I could use the extra cash (can't we all?).  So as I have time I will be compiling a really large list of artwork for sale and prices.  For the moment if you are interested in any of my traditional/real media works shoot me a note or comment or whatever and I will be happy to work with you in re-homing it!  Also, if you are buying multiple pieces I might consider negotiating in some instances.

Obviously the originals will not have watermarks on them.

Shipping

There will be $5 shipping within the USA for all purchases, $8 to Canada or Mexico, and $10 international shipping.  If you purchase multiple pieces they are all covered under the initial shipping price so you won't be charged $5 per piece to ship, but $5 per shipment.

Payment

I accept PayPal and check, pieces will be shipped upon receipt of payment.

Extras

Purchases over $40 get a sketch included, $80 purchases get an ink drawing, $100+ get an 8x10 commission.

My computer has been in and out of the shop all Summer.  The Geniuses at the Apple Store can't seem to find anything wrong with it since they wiped the harddrive, though I have had it act up again.  I am annoyed.

Anyway, I have had to reinstall everything on my computer, including my tablet drivers and I am now, unfortunately, without Photoshop.  I do use Corel Painter more for art, but PS has its uses (I was operating with CS2).

Things are plugging along and I am entering my busy season with work.  I hope to start carving out time for more art, but we will see.  Some major projects in General Life have been completed, which frees up some things, but if it isn't one thing it always seems to be another!

I was finally able to renew my subscription.  Ads are annoying and so is not being able to use thumbnails.

I am still working on the Pleasure Harness Tutorial:

Pleasure Driving Harness I by lantairvlea Pleasure Driving Harness II by lantairvlea Pleasure Driving Harness III by lantairvlea Pleasure Driving Harness IV by lantairvlea
:iconredlineplease: is a group for those seeking redlines, people who keep an eye on my scraps might have noticed I am one of the redline contributors for the group.

We're getting ready to reopen submissions, which means if you need a redline join and submit!  We are also looking for contributors/new redliners to handle the load.

Come join the fun!
Once I get my subscription again I'm thinking of offering the harness tutorials as both prints and high-quality downloads.  They are designed to fit on a regular piece of paper (8x10 actually).  There's a reason my tutorials are multi-paged.  One I have vague thoughts of providing them in print form and two those super long tutorials all on one page drive me nuts because they take forever to load, and additionally I have a tendency to take on large projects that take a long time to finish and it's nice to at least have a little something to show for it.

Anyway, the original files are 3-6 times larger than the ones posted which should produce some nice prints and provide even more visual detail for those interested in it.

Would any of you want to take advantage of that?

Also if you've noticed any spelling errors, mislabeling, gaps in information, or have unanswered questions that you feel need to be addressed please let me know!  After finishing the pleasure harness I do have one more collar and hames harness to photograph and run through.  I also am entertaining the idea of photographing my cart and carriage as well.  Another overly ambitious idea of mine is going through my photos and categorizing both harnesses and vehicles, but we're probably talking years down the line.

So the short of it is: help me get these things print ready if any of you are interested in it and I have more stuff I'd like do do in the long term.

Because I need a new one.

I changed my ID (after almost three years...) and am hoping to get another driving harness tutorial/photo walk-through started.  I ran out of time to do one of my harnesses as it moved on with the horse that it fit and since we're trying to sell the breastcollar harness I need to get off my duff and document the thing before it's too late!  We also acquired a new harness and since it appears that no two harnesses are ever the same it provides another opportunity for me to take more pictures and try to take the time to get it pieced together in a somewhat understandable manner.

I still want to do the Hoof-to-Head tutorial and I have distant wishes to do more on the Taking Pictures of Your Art tutorial, but I guess other things take precedence!

Life continues to buzz along.  I have reduced my living-breathing herd by two horses and now have a much more manageable six.  I feel like I can actually get all of them worked regularly each week now without guilt over missing someone hanging eternally over my head.

Riding Lessons are going well and I have a pretty good group of clients that keep me quite busy.

Other things are going on that also keep my time tight and are why I seem to randomly comment on peoples' pictures months after they've been submitted because the ones I want to comment on languish in my inbox until I have time to do so.

And I should go and accomplish some other things rather than rambling on.

Reset

Tue Aug 28, 2012, 1:28 PM
This is mostly copy-pasted from my LiveJournal (same username for the curious), but it goes along with the poll (possibly polls) that I'll be tossing out there.

After I finally manage to complete chapter one of "Shifting Times" I plan on completely redoing it.  Why?  The first pages will be 10 years old soon, if they are not already.  Such as it is the first pages don't reflect what I'm currently capable of, plus they aren't even the same medium as the subsequent ones.

Before I churn out that first, new, freshly made page one to "Runaways" I'm going to have to sit down and do some serious research. Yes this is a made-up setting, but I want it to feel real and rich. One of my weak points is architecture and while I have some ideas on the basic design of the city settings I'm completely at a loss for the details and I think those details are what is going to help really make this something memorable. I want people to get into the story, yes, but I also want them to be able to get into the world as much as I do as well.

Of course first I have to finish chapter one to begin with. That has to be done before I can reset. I've been so close, but it's a matter of sitting down and doing it without feeling too guilty about other obligations. Other obligations that I really need to get out of the way first.

So come the reset I have things to focus on:

Setting
Sketches of the places the novel takes place in so I feel confident drawing the environment rather than just trying to make it up as I go along. It needs to feel like a place and have character rather than being incidental. While the Sha and Kistau Estate are the only two really emotionally charged places at this point the others shouldn't feel like they are a mere prop. Well, I guess Durray is important being Mri'tia's home base, but at this point it is more Shinkir's story. Merging Worlds is about her quest to save Kri, it is future parts that will focus in on Mri'tia and her importance, but I'm getting ahead of myself.

Characters
While no one is really getting a redesign at this point so far as their major forms I do need to familiarize myself with their other forms and get down their designs and colors. My initial thought was that the Marks, eye color, and gender would be consistent throughout each shape-shifting character's forms, but then I started thinking more about genetics and how they work and parallel phenotypes among species and decided that coloration would also be linked. For example Shinkir is a recessive light dilute, in horse terms she'd probably be champagne over chestnut, giving pale eyes and a light body color. Rirhe would be dominant medium base coat possibly with some sort of modifier for his eyes. His human form is a red head, which may be too obvious of a translation from his fox-like base form of a keine Frineir. So sketching and coloring of character's forms. That ties back in with trying to get a handle on the Shami'en genetics. Revisiting character design.

Script
I'm actually still pretty happy with the script for chapter one "Runaways." There is some minor spelling things and perhaps reworking the very beginning intro a bit, but we'll see when I get to it.

Layout
I'm contemplating a possible landscape format for the pages and also designing it with a book in mind, which I haven't quite done at this point. I have wanted to get it into book form, but I haven't been treating the pages as if they're in a book and would be side by side in some cases, which means I haven't been using the space to its potential. This must be remedied.

Medium
Digital or traditional? I started traditional, went to digital and now I'm not sure if I want to keep it digital or pick it up traditionally. Digital made sense when I was a student and I was dragging my sketchbook with the inks all over and working on it here and there, but there's no reason to do that now as I predominantly work from home and I don't have that "dead" time away from home that I worked in on the go. So something to contemplate.

Of course before I do all of this I have to get my plate clean first and finish Chapter one. Some of it I can obviously peck away at in the meantime, but I have other things before I can really dig in deep again.

Ask a Mormon

Wed Jun 13, 2012, 3:12 PM
With Mitt Romney running for president the LDS church is in the news again as it was with the issues with the Fundamentalist (FLDS) a few years ago I feel it's a good time to open this up.

Other than Islam (in the US at least) there probably isn't a more misunderstood religion. To do my part in helping to dispel some of the myth and mystery surrounding the church I am open for questions. I don't care how serious or silly I will answer to the best of my ability. I've heard some really interesting misconceptions so don't feel like you're going to offend me or anything so long as it is in the spirit of learning.

I always thought that if you're trying to understand something you need to go to the source. Part of the reason I'm reading the Qur'an.  You wouldn't ask a plumber how to change your car's oil, why would you ask your pastor (bishop, rabbi, priest) about another church?

So ask away!

Dear Watchers

Wed Feb 22, 2012, 2:18 PM
Edit: Just letting you all know that this is still in effect.  Comment if you're interested!

So I do this thing where I go to my new watcher's galleries and give them a bit of a critique of their work.  I take the time to give a little bit back to my watchers in appreciation for their support, however I have gotten ridiculously behind in this task.  I have messages from June sitting in my center and I have to prioritize my time and playing eternal catch-up on this one thing is a little discouraging, though it is something I generally enjoy doing.

To help bring back balance in my life and assuage the guilt of this really big list of people I'm going to do this instead:

If you watch me and are reading this journal, I don't care how long you've been watching (I'm only eight months behind, but those of you who have been around longer are welcome to participate), make a comment here if you'd like me to do one of two things:

Critique your overall gallery, thoughts and impressions I have about both your strengths and weaknesses, what I think you might want to do to bring your art to the next stage.

Or

A detailed critique or redline of a single piece of your choice.  Those who watch my scraps are familiar with the redlines I do.

I am now going to clear my message center without guilt!

Thank you all for your time and support.

Blue Moon Acres (of the HorseArt RPG) will be hosting the first Draft Horse Circuit Show of 2012!  :iconnatural-drafters: Promotes and encourages the use of draft horses.  These powerful and gentle horses are regaining popularity as people rediscover their calm and willing nature.  You can do a lot more with a draft than people think!

Judging and Deadline: The show will run until April 30th, 2012.  This is a firm deadline so don't delay!

Judging will be a combination of a random roll (1-60), bonus points from previous experiences, and class-specific requirements (40 pts).

Bonus Points
Training picture specific to this show: +1
Each past show in this class (each, up to 3): +5
Up to 3 extra placing points (i.e 1-1st, 2-3rds or 1-1st,1-2nd, 1-3rd or 3-2nds etc.)
Previous winner of class: +10

Prizes: The class list is fairly large and in addition to individual prizes for classes there will be a Versatility Award/Champion and Reserve Champion for those who enter in multiple events.  Winners of individual classes will receive a portrait of their horse wearing a ribbon.  Champion of show will receive a full-color commission of their horse with background in either digital or traditional media, a high-quality 8X10 print will be mailed in the case of digital and the original will be sent if you choose traditional.  The Reserve Champion will also receive a full-color commission, but with a simple background and the print will be 5X6" and a traditional piece would be of comparable size.

2) Pleasure Driving - Cart (Two-wheeled, single horse)
3) Team Driving (Four-wheeled, two horses)
4) Four-Up

Class Requirements

Please no photos for backgrounds.  We are here to improve our skills, please draw your own background.  You can use a single background multiple times, but please draw it yourself!

Age: Halter classes are open to all ages from weanling up to aged horses.  Driving classes require the horse(s) to be at least three.  Draft and pull classes require the horse(s) to be at least five due to the greater stress put on them during these events.  For riding classes the horse should be at least four.

Breed and Type: All horses should be of draft type.  Draft crosses will be allowed so long as they are of draft type (shouldn't look like a warmblood or, heaven forbid, a hot blood).  Draft ponies are also acceptable such as: Fjord, Haflinger, Fell, Dale, etc.  But again, they must be of the draft type!  Fantasy drafts are also allowed.  There will be up to a 20 point deduction if your horse is not obviously of draft type.  A lot of bone, broad chests, big hips, and stout bodies are standard.  I know stylization, but a draft horse should not be 70% leg nor walk around on toothpicks.

Halter: With or without handler, horse must be wearing a halter or show bridle either standing or in motion, but the conformation should be easily seen.  I will be looking at angles and proportion as well as comparing to breed standard.  Major faults will result in deductions (i.e. wildly disproportionate, sway backed, broken pastern/hoof angles, etc.)

Pleasure Driving: Harness, cart, and driver.  Braids are required as is proper attire for the driver (whip included).  While part of each is required feel free to be inventive with the framing, full view of everything is not required.

Team Driving:  Both horses, harness, at least part of the wagon, and driver depicted.  No braid required.  While part of each is required feel free to be inventive with the framing, full view of everything is not required.

Tandem Driving:  Both horses, harness, part of cart, and driver visible.  Braids optional.  Tandem driving has two horses, but they are single-file pulling a two wheeled cart.

Four-Up:  Four horses visible, harness, part of the wagon, and driver.  No braids required.  While part of each is required feel free to be inventive with the framing, full view of everything is not required.

Four Abreast:  Four horses, harness, part of wagon, and driver, this is a braided class.  While part of each is required feel free to be inventive with the framing, full view of everything is not required.

Unicorn:  All three horses visible, harness, part of wagon, and driver, this is a braided class.  While part of each is required feel free to be inventive with the framing, full view of everything is not required.

Six-Up: All six horses visible, harness, part of wagon, and driver, this is a braided class.  While part of each is required feel free to be inventive with the framing, full view of everything is not required.

Weight Pull: Single or team, harness and part of sled visible, driver doesn't have to be depicted.

Log Pull/Draft Obstacle: Single horse, harness, log, driver doesn't have to be depicted.

Western Riding: Tack and rider required.  Rider's wear can be casual or glitzy, but should be neat and clean.  Inventive framing encouraged.

English Riding: Tack and rider required.  Huntseat, Saddleseat, Dressage, or Jumping tack, so long as it's English.   Inventive framing encouraged.

Draft Horse Barrel Race:  Tack and rider required as well as part of a barrel, though the horse does not have to be turning around it.   Inventive framing encouraged.

Deadline
The show will end April 30th, 2012.

Not-So-Random Disappearance

Mon Dec 19, 2011, 8:13 AM
So I meant to write a journal about my disappearing sometime around this time for undisclosed reasons for about two weeks or so (at least that's most likely at this point) and things moved a bit faster than initially expected so here it is now a bit after the fact and somewhat in the middle at the same time:

I apologize if I do not respond with any speed to notes, comments, or anything of the like.  Have some big life changes that call for a bit of an adjustment period to say the least.  All positive, but I'm not going to blabber on about it here, if you're really curious you can note me.  I don't think I have turned on my computer in almost a week, actually, definitely not the last five days.

Oh real quick:  If you're waiting for art from me (i.e. show awards, etc.) please send me a note.  I haven't forgotten anyone (I don't think), but again, life changes going on and other things have taken priority and a little reminder will help me reorganize and focus better on what needs to be done.

I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas!  If you don't celebrate Christmas then Happy Hanukkah, Qwanza, Yule, or just enjoy the festive atmosphere.

Website Revamp

You all failed me on the 16,000 kiriban. Shall we try for 17,000? The one who gets it receives a free sketch!

---------

Those who watch my scraps and polls have noticed that I'm working on redesigning my website.  It started with this poll: lantairvlea.deviantart.com/jou… and I think I've somewhat whittled it down, though I'm still wide open for suggestions.  I'm pretty positive that I will be changing the font for the banner, just haven't decided what to yet so suggestions are more than welcome.

Apparently they don't allow you to do thumbnails on scrapbook pieces so here are the links:

Test Run One
Test Run Two
Test Run Three
Test Run Four
Test Run Five
Test Run Six

And the current Poll: lantairvlea.deviantart.com/jou…

Believe it or not I've actually never asked for outside input in working on my own personal site before.  I'm trying to bring up to a more professional presentation and have something that I (and my clients) will be quite happy with for a while to come and I want to be sure I'm not missing anything that might help me improve the site.

Of course the final banner images as noted in the descriptions won't be blurry, watermarked, or have the "home" button.

Thank you all for your input and especially thanks to those who have already offered help, it's greatly appreciated!

The Results are In!

Blue Moon Acres (of the HorseArt RPG) will be hosting the first Draft Horse Circuit Show of 2011!  We're getting off to a bit of a late start this year as the Year-End Championship Show ran a little over.

Judging and Deadline: The show will run until May 31st, 2011.  This is a firm deadline so don't delay!

Judging will be a combination of a random roll (1-100) and points from previous experiences.

Training picture: +1
Each past show in this class (each, up to 3): +5
Previous show winner of class (1st place, once only): +10

It is the shower's responsibility to submit the appropriate information to qualify for the bonus points.  I will not go searching for said information, but will double-check that which is submitted.

List of Classes
1) Halter/Conformation- Compared to breed standard
2) Pleasure Driving - Cart (Two-wheeled, single horse)
3) Team Driving (Four-wheeled, two horses)
4) Four-Up

7) Six-Up
8) Weight Pull, Single or Team
9) Log Pull/Draft

Yes, I am alive.  I've been kept busy tending to my horses and have had a large, multi-image commission I've been working on, including this one NRA Gun Safety by lantairvlea that has kept me busy.  Despite that I am open for commissions with full information available here: www.keist.net/sales.html I am open for everything from sketches and icons to fully rendered pieces be they traditional or digital.  I am also open for the "Expressive Line" style drawings from simple black ink to greyscale and "full color" such as EAX August Av Forbannet by lantairvlea and EAX January by lantairvlea for those interested.

In other news I've had the idea of a very detailed in-depth Equine Anatomy Tutorial in the works for several months now.  It will look at individual parts of the horse in great detail from the hoof, forelegs, hindlegs, hip structure, tail set, neck, head, and nostrils to the ears, lips, barrel, back, etc. and soforth.  I also plan on tending to the basic body types from light breeds to drafts, ponies, and more.  I have part of the lower leg portion drawn which includes notes on how feather presents itself on horse legs as well as the underlying bone structure.

The point being, I know a lot of you watch me for my equine art so I ask: What do YOU have the most difficulty with?  What about equine anatomy (and conformation) would you like to see explored more thoroughly and addressed in a detailed for-the-artist manner?

Also, would you be interested in purchasing prints of these pages or a "book" that you could buy and refer to?  I don't expect to have a page done until after the first of the year amidst my other obligations, but I'm trying to get a feel for the interest and need out there.

Thanks to all of you who have watched, commented, and otherwise supported and encouraged me over the last several years.  Hard to believe I've been on DA for almost nine years!

Shagya
Shagya by lantairvlea
1. He's named after the foundation sire of his breed (Shagya Arab), which the breed is also named after.
2. He can go from dead-broke to hot in no time flat, however not in a "I-don't-have-a-brain-and-the-world-is-out-to-get-me" way.
3. Shagya is a terrible show-off and prefers work in extended, powerful gaits to collected ones.
4. I haven't drawn him since I imported him *shame.*
5. He doesn't do well with "vacation" and would go insane if he ever actually retired.
6. He wonders why all the other horses are always so winded after the cross-country phase of the event.
7. He prefers to hang out with Challenger and A Classic Finish as he doesn't understand the draft mentality.
8. He always listens to his rider ... he just isn't always a gentleman about it.

Nordland
BMa Nordland by lantairvlea
1. Truth be told I'm not super fond of the Leopard Spot pattern, but I absolutely love how this mare looks.
2. For a big girl she has a lot of energy and it takes a lot to get her tired.
3. She acts more like a gelding than a mare in most cases.
4. If she has tack on (especially a harness) she's working.  Doesn't matter if you leave her ground tied she'll stand stock-still for hours.  Even on grass.
5. She is surprisingly nimble and athletic for her size.
6. She doesn't like apples and won't go near her feed bucket if there's an apple in it.
7. Yes, all that hair is natural!
8. Don't call her an Appaloosa ... just don't do it.

And ... I don't really do the tag thing.  If you're interested, fire away.
